What is the name of this highly reactive nuclear substance?

It was requisitioned by scientists during the Manhattan project as a 3-inch sphere, but they couldn't because a 3-inch sphere was many times the world's supply of that substance. I think today Turkey has the largest deposit of it, and it's extremely dangerous and explosive.
